Touching God

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - "
1 John 1:1
"And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His, glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."      John 1:14
Within these verses the Apostle John describes an active, vibrant, living relationship he had with the Jesus Christ he walked with, lived with, stood by, and knew. The one word that best describes this relationship is intimacy.

When God created Adam, He walked with him in the garden. God has since walked with Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and many others. He made man for community with others of his own kind, but before community, God made mankind for Himself. He desires that we walk with Him in His ways (Psalms 81:13).

Amos 3:3 tells us that we walk with God by agreement with Him, on His terms. Indeed, the whole of our relationship with God is by His direction. When we stand with Him, it is on His holy ground, His holy mountain.

A child walking with his father, holding his father's hand will walk where the Father walks. As long as the child holds onto the Father's hand, he is safe. But as soon as he lets go and proceeds on his own way he is in danger from his surroundings. We have a Father Who loves us so much that He wants no harm to come to us; He knows we need to be with Him, walking with Him, talking with Him, listening to Him, doing and saying the things we see and hear from Him. This requires intimacy.

"That I may know Him," is the way Paul describes this intimacy (Phil. 3:10). He wanted to be so totally found in Him (v. 9) as to not be seen (Gal. 2:20). For Paul, to live is Christ (Phil. 1:21). Our very existence must imitate his example. As God touches us - molds us, conforms us to the image of His Son - we can touch the Father's heart. Intimacy places us and keeps us walking with Him.

And that is a good place to be.
